We were delighted to welcome 𝐆𝐚𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐡 𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐨𝐢𝐠𝐡, 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤, winner of the inaugural Bord na Móna Recycling Primary Schools Upcycling Competition to Mountlucas Wind Farm and Lough Boora Discovery Park last week as part of their prize.
The students commenced their day at Mountlucas Wind Farm where they received a presentation on the history of the wind farm and bogs whilst learning about renewable energy, before having the opportunity to visit a turbine up close. The children were eager to talk about peat and how their relatives used to work for Bord na Móna. They were amazed by the size of the windmills up close, and happy to see and inspect one of the blades.
Next, they visited the picturesque Lough Boora Discovery Park, where they received a guided nature tour through its sculpture park, fairy village and field study area, examining local flora and wildlife whilst learning about the history of Bord na Móna.
The children had the chance to perform their own experiment on one of the bogs. They split into two and took turns jumping on the bog, and they felt the ground shake each time. They enjoyed taking pictures at all the different sculptures and hearing the stories behind them. The group favourite was the “Lough Boora Monster”, which is located in the middle of a river. Its body is made from railway tracks, and the head is made from all the tools that were used on these tracks and in the bogs.
The day ended with a trip through the fairy forest, including the maze and tunnels. They used the worry plate to release all their worries and ran through the fairy village, learning about the different fairies. Back at the bus, they received their goodie bags, which were full of treats and healthy options for the trip back home to Limerick.
Thanks once again to all the students and schools who took part in the initiative. Stay tuned for exciting details regarding the launch of the 2024/2025 Primary Schools Upcycling Competition, coming soon.
