The nominations continue with Bord na Móna Recycling announced as a finalist for the ICCLA Urban Greening Project of the Year Award at Ireland’s Climate Change Leadership Awards for our Primary Schools Upcycling Competition.
The Climate Change Leadership Awards honour businesses, organizations, individuals and initiatives that have demonstrated outstanding commitment and innovation in making positive changes to help address the challenge of climate change, with the ceremony taking place on Thursday November 7th, in the historic Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin.
The Urban Greening Award recognises initiatives that enhance urban spaces, improve environmental quality, and benefit communities.
The Bord na Móna Recycling’s Primary Schools Upcycling Competition brought students, teachers, parents and community members together around a common cause, and through it community pride and collaboration towards a goal of sustainability was created.
The environmental impact of the initiative was significant, as demonstrated by the enhancement of local biodiversity, the reduction in waste and the repurposing of old materials. The competition encouraged students to repurpose waste materials, which reduced the volume of waste sent to landfill. This not only decreased environmental pollution but also highlighted the value of materials that would otherwise be discarded. It also reduced urban environmental footprint by lowering resource consumption. The initiative reduced the demand for new resources, such as raw materials for manufacturing new products, which in turn lowered the environmental footprint of urban areas during and beyond the competition.
We are proud to have empowered students to become change-makers in their communities, cultivating environmental responsibility, instilling a circular economy mindset and inspiring them to play a role in helping Ireland reach its climate targets.
