As the August Bank Holiday approaches, many customers are taking on home improvement projects, garden clean-ups, or large decluttering efforts. Hiring a skip can be a convenient and efficient way to manage waste for these tasks. However, it’s important to consider safety when using skips, especially during the summer months when outdoor activity increases. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:

 1. Choose the Right Size Skip – Selecting the appropriate skip size is crucial for safety. Overloading a skip can lead to waste spilling over, creating hazards. Ensure you estimate the volume of your waste accurately and use our handy size guide. Opt for a skip size that accommodates all your waste without exceeding its capacity.

 2. Proper Placement of the Skip – Skips should be placed on a stable, flat surface away from traffic and pedestrian pathways. If possible, it is best practice to avoid placing the skip on soft ground where it might sink or become unstable.

 3. Avoid Overloading the Skip – Overfilled skips pose significant safety risks. Items protruding from the top can fall out, potentially causing injury or damage. Fill the skip evenly and ensure that waste does not exceed the height of the skip’s sides. If you find you have more waste than expected, consider hiring an additional skip rather than overloading one.

 4. Be Mindful of Hazardous Materials – Not all waste can be disposed of in a skip. Hazardous materials such as chemical waste, batteries, asbestos, gas /pressurised cylinders, mattress, end of life tyres, paint tines are just some of the items that cannot be placed in your skip.  5. Safe Loading Practices – When loading the skip, use proper lifting techniques to avoid injury. Bend your knees and keep your back straight when lifting heavy items. If possible, dismantle bulky items to make them easier and safer to handle. Avoid throwing items into the skip, as this can cause debris to scatter and create hazards.

 6. Protect Yourself from the Sun – Working outdoors in the summer can expose you to harmful UV rays. Wear appropriate clothing, including a hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen to protect your skin. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially if you’re filling your skip in direct sunlight for extended periods.

 7. Keep Children and Pets Safe – Skips and their surrounding area can be hazardous, especially if they contain sharp or heavy objects. It is therefore important to ensure that children and pets are kept away from your skip at all times.

 8. Monitor Weather Conditions – Summer weather can be unpredictable. Keep an eye on the forecast and secure your skip if high winds or heavy rain are expected. Covering the skip can also help prevent water from accumulating and making the waste heavier and more difficult to handle.

By following these #summersafety guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and safe experience when hiring a skip this summer.
