Barretstown’s Big Picnic

Celebrating Barretstown’s 30th Birthday with Fun and Learning: Bord na Móna Recycling at the Big Picnic.

Bord na Móna Recycling were thrilled to be part of Barretstown’s 30th birthday celebration at their Big Picnic event. This incredible event took place on the 7th of July, marking three decades of Barretstown’s outstanding therapeutic camps and programs. With their gates open to the public, it was a family fun day like no other, showcasing the amazing activities and support Barretstown has been providing for years.

At Bord na Móna’s stand, we were delighted to engage with families by handing out balloons on recyclable sticks and fun-filled activity packs. These packs were specially designed to teach children about environmental care through games, making learning about recycling and sustainability both entertaining and memorable.

One of the highlights of our participation was Wendy the Waste Bin, our lively mascot. Wendy posed for pictures and danced with children, spreading joy and enthusiasm about waste management and recycling.

To make recycling interactive and enjoyable, Bord na Móna Recycling introduced a waste education game involving three bins: recycling, compost, and waste. Children were given a variety of different pretend waste items, and had to state to which bin they belong before throwing them in into the correct bin from a distance.  Their enthusiasm and quick learning about waste segregation demonstrated how effective fun, hands-on activities can be in teaching important environmental lessons.

Being part of Barretstown’s Big Picnic was not just about fun and games; it was also a crucial fundraising day to support the wonderful work Barretstown does. The event featured a number of activities, including canoeing, archery, face painting, dancing, giant games, the circus, mini-golf, and much more! Families had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the joy and excitement of the day while also appreciating the incredible therapeutic environment Barretstown offers.

Bord na Móna Recycling are immensely proud to have contributed to such a meaningful event, helping to educate the next generation about the importance of recycling and environmental stewardship. It was a day filled with laughter, learning, and celebration, and we look forward to continuing our support for Barretstown and their invaluable mission.
