Gaelscoil Chaladh an Treoigh, Limerick wins Bord na Móna Recycling’s Primary Schools Upcycling Competition.
Commenting on Gaelscoil Chaladh an Treoigh’s entry Shane Mackey, Brand Marketing Manager at Bord na Móna Recycling stated:
“We were truly inspired by the creativity, effort, and passion demonstrated from schools across Ireland. The judges were very impressed by the pupils of Gaelscoil Chaladh an Treoigh who sought to enhance and protect their school environment. The pupils demonstrated excellent lateral thinking by upcycling materials, adding informative art-work and ultimately, constructing & delivering a durable solution to a real-world problem.”
The winning entry saw 30 old pallets illustrated with forest wildlife, birds, mini-beats & native trees and subsequently mounted and secured in front of newly sowed native trees to protect them from footballs and other playground games.
Speaking on their entry Frankie Uí Fhrainclín, Phríomhoide at Gaelscoil Chaladh an Treoigh commented:
“I wanted to empower them to look at the problem and help create a solution, in an environmentally friendly way. After many creative ideas and suggestions, there was consensus that Ruadhán’s idea of sourcing old pallets would work best. They gathered 36 old pallets which were then painted, connected and secured.
It was wonderful to see the teamwork that took place as they organised, planned, and painted. I was very proud of the resourcefulness they used in creating the end product, which has enhanced our efforts to promote biodiversity in our school. This project enabled them to understand that when they see a problem, there is always a solution that can be achieved through co-operation and collaboration. Going beyond waste management by rethinking waste solutions for climate action, Bord na Móna Recycling continues to guide Ireland towards a circular economy, by supporting students in becoming more waste conscious.
Speaking on this, Bord na Móna Recycling Brand Marketing Manager Shane Mackey stated:
“Bord na Móna believes in instilling a sense of environmental awareness from an early age. Through this initiative and the support of teachers and Primary Schools across Ireland together we have helped to raise awareness about the importance of upcycling and waste reduction whilst inspiring students to make a difference. We thank the schools for their participation and for the creativity, effort, and passion demonstrated in their entries. We look forward to their involvement in our future initiatives as we now develop plans for Secondary Schools.”
